“Sticks and stones may break their bones, but words will never hurt them.”
Remember that thrilling speech that President Obama gave on the eve of 9/11 about erasing ISIL from the world? Our president declared defiantly that America will “degrade and ultimately destroy” these barbaric terrorists. It was a speech guaranteed to run chills up some people’s legs.
Vice President Joe Biden went further, announcing that America would “chase ISIL to the gates of hell.” But now that the television lights have cooled for days and reality has set in, what’s really happening in Iraq and Syria has replaced rhetoric in the mind of our president and in those who surround him when his office doors are closed. The heat is on and the chills have been leaving those legs.
Yesterday, White House Chief of Staff Denis McDonough sent the kind of signals to ISIL that must have made them slap each other on the back. McDonough not only left out any reference to the word “war”, but went much further. The Chief of Staff said America simply plans to “eliminate” the threat of ISIL, not to “eliminate” the organization of ISIL.
As one who is used to pulling weeds, I learned many years ago that unless you take the weed out by the root, it will simply grow back, often far stronger than the original weed. President Obama is a wordsmith. As a Union Organizer he learned the absolute essential importance of using exact words to stir the crowd and he learned which words to totally avoid. The ISIL terrorists must be giving each other high fives at the continual toning down of anything America may do following the Reagan-like challenge of President Obama’s last Wednesday nights speech.
The president’s Chief of Staff did graphically describe what our military troops accompanied by many others from countries far and wide, will do with ISIL. He said “Success looks like an ISIL that no longer threatens our friends in the region, and no longer threatens the United States. An ISIL that can’t accumulate followers, or threaten Muslims in Syria, Iran, Iraq, or otherwise. And that’s exactly what success looks like.”
All of that sounds wonderful to the American ear; but his words aren’t even beginning to be lived out. Except for continuing airstrikes in Iraq and maybe in Syria, Obama has made no military advancements whatsoever since his now almost entirely meaningless speech.
And if you’re looking for someone who is having a hard time accumulating followers, you have only to look at the president. His promise of a ten major country coalition, with 40 countries supporting them, is already reduced to nine major countries who won’t be putting boots on the ground or even airplanes in the sky and the weak support system of far less than 40 who have been arm-twisted by John Kerry.
The bottom line is that ISIL is going on with their chopping children in half, and raping women before they murder them while crucifying their husbands. Meanwhile they continually shout to the world that they are on their way to fully control it with Shariah law. And their plan for Europe and America is to “degrade and ultimately destroy them.”
