Left Behind The Kids –The Search Chapters 3 and 4 – Clue Quest, The Secret Room
Ryan hurdled the toppled trash bin and flew down the alley. He wanted to stop and knew he had to keep running. It was his only chance.
He heard the screech of tires. A car flattened a trash bin like a pop can. Ryan kept moving. He passed houses with gang symbols spray-painted on the outside.
He jumped the turnstiles of the elevated train. The cashier screamed at him. Ryan shouted back, “Call the police!”
“I’ll call them on you!” The cashier yelled.
His legs were lead as he ran up the stairs. A pay phone. Call Judd, he thought. No money in his pockets. He didn’t have time anyway. Two doors slammed, and the men were gaining on him.
People milled about, waiting for the next train. A businessman with his nose in the paper. A woman with a frilly dress and tennis shoes. Ryan ran through the crowd to a chain-link fence at the end of the platform. Trapped! The only way out was to run onto the tracks.
He jumped.
A woman screamed, “No!”
He wasn’t trying to kill himself. He wanted to live. So he kept running, staying away from the dangerous third rail. One misstep, and he was dead.
He saw the men jump onto the tracks. Then he heard a noise. Felt it. It started as a low rumbling, like the vibration of speakers on his stereo. He looked up to see the train a hundred yards away and coming fast. He turned, but the men were close now. He ran toward the oncoming train.
Finally, the men retreated. The train blew its horn. Even if the conductor slammed on the brakes, Ryan knew it would be too late. He had to jump the third rail.
The woman screamed again. She was behind the men. It looked like… but it couldn’t be.
“Mom?” Ryan said, the train bearing down on him. His foot wedged in the track. The sound was deafening.
