Judd preferred to have Mark join him, but he insisted. The rain matted her hair. It had been Vicki’s idea to scream. Judd thought her piercing wail would not only alert the GC guards but also scare them.
Once Judd made sure the GC guards were after them, they bolted toward the clearing. The rain fell hard. Judd held up a hand to block it. He saw Mark’s signal in the distance, a blinking flashlight.
Judd was right about the dogs. They couldn’t track as well in the rain. He heard their yelping and turned. Two flashlights scanned the bottom of the hill.
A few yards from the entrance to the cave, Judd picked up the signal again. A flashlight beam crossed their path. Judd’s heart sank.
“There they are!” A man yelled.
Judd grabbed Vicki’s and pulled her away from the hideout.
“To the woods,” Judd yelled over the noise of the rain.

Conrad’s first instinct was to reach out and grab Felicia’s gun, but something made him hold back. The two girls seemed icy cold.
Mr. Stein turned pale. “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” he said.
Felicia gritted her teeth and pushed the gun harder against the man’s scalp. “Where are you hiding them?”
“I told you, I haven’t seen Vicki or any of the others since – –”
“Just get it over with,” Melinda said. She glanced at Conrad. “Or maybe he wants to do it.”
Conrad understood. In the split second one Melinda caught his eye he knew the two were trying to trap him. Perhaps they had the commander’s approval. That was probably why the guard at the front hadn’t put up a fight about them searching the place. The whole evening it been a test.
Conrad shrugged. “You know this is going to look good,” he said.
Felicia pulled the gun away slightly, and Mr. Stein took a breath.
