Today With Ray 8/22/15 Handicapping a horserace
Handicapping a horserace is done with a scratch sheet that shows a person the horses in each race’s track record. Whether they can run in the mud as well as as in the sunshine; how many races they have run and how they did in each of them. People who are used to betting at the racetrack seldom bet on a horse that shows real weaknesses in the way they have run in the past (unless they get a “hot” tip).
Political races are very much like horse races. Voters choose who they believe is the finest “horse” and then keeps cheering for them unless the “horse” does something that disqualifies it from the race or suddenly runs out of horsepower.
Although the Republican candidates have already had their first debate they are just “off and running.” They have a long long way to go before any of them will finally cross the finish line as the winner. Even then, they will have only won the candidacy of their party. The second part of the race – Republican candidate against Democrat candidate – will almost certainly determine the real winner. Looking back in history, a third-party candidate, if they get enough votes, still appears to only raise dust. Still they can have a definite affect on the outcome of an election. They can cipher enough votes away from the candidate who thinks more like they do and thereby hand the presidency to both of their opponent.
Some horses do run out of energy during a race and either drop out or can only be found in the back of the pack. And some presidential candidates run out of enough campaign finances to stay in the race. It’s sad when your favorite is one of those who can’t afford to continue.
Join me right now as I “handicap” all 17 of the “horses” in the Republican race for 2016 and see if you agree with my scratch sheet. -Ray
