Secrets of the United States Presidents from U.S. News & World Report
Millions of Americans – 38 million, to be precise – clapped, swooned, cried, or intently watched on television as Barack Obama was sworn in as the 44th president of the United States on January 20, 2009. While in Frist certainly ran high this year because Obama was the first African-American to assume the highest office in the land. The truth is that Americans have always had an intense curiosity about their presidents. They want to know not only how their leader runs the country and interacts with the rest of the world but also for more mundane – and sometimes prurient – details about the president, such as how he (and so far, it has always been a “he”) gets along with his family, what he does for exercise, what he and his family eat, and what kind of pet they have. Does anyone in America, for instance, not know that the Obama’s have a new Portuguese water dog named Bo?
And yet, despite this constant letter of attention, much about our nation’s presidents and their families remains shrouded in secrecy. Often their essential character and the basic motivations remain unfathomed. Even well-documented presidents, such as Abraham Lincoln (the Abraham Lincoln Online website lists more than 30 books published in the past year alone), offer the promise of unsolved mysteries for catalyzing new clues about some aspect of their innermost selves.
In this edition, US News explores the hidden, human side of the US presidency, focusing on the private thoughts and personal experiences of those who have held this very public job. In the process, the issue offers insights about why certain presidents, beginning with George Washington, were able to prevail in difficult times while others, such as Ulysses S Grant – who, like Washington, was elected after a brilliant military career – did not always succeed in governing as effectively. It provides clues to how, in the mercurial world of politics, some individuals, by means of a mysterious inner alchemy, and develop almost magically the talents needed for a successful presidency.
