King David, a murderer, an adulterer, and a horrible parent, oh and loved by God! Chapter 7, Part 2, Spiritual Giants by RT Kendall
The only person in the Bible described as a man after God’s own heart (1 Samuel 13:14; Acts 13:22), King David was an example of the grace of God as Jacob was – with this difference: Moses, who wrote Genesis, does not allow us to get very deeply into Jacob’s conscious feelings, but the writer of the life of David lets us see how David felt. Besides that, we have David’s own feelings displayed in many of his psalms.
David had several wives and many concubines. God gave him the house of Judah and theIsrael, and if that were not enough, He said to David, “I would have given you even more” (2 Samuel 12:8). But all this apparently did not satisfy David. One day David saw a beautiful woman bathing. David’s lust seized him. Inquiring who she was, he was told that her name was Bathsheba and that she was married to Uriah, one of David soldiers. That should have stopped him. It didn’t. He invited her to his palace and slept with her. What might have been of one off afternoon affair became complicated when she sent word to David a few weeks later that she was pregnant. Then David conceived the idea of bringing Uriah home for the weekend to sleep with his wife. But as we saw earlier, Uriah had an “overly scrupulous conscience,” and he refused to sleep with Bathsheba. David therefore ordered Uriah to be stationed in the hottest part of the battle. It worked. Uriah was killed (2 Samuel 11).
