Simon Peter from Ch 7, Pt. 3 of RT Kendall’s How To Forgive Ourselves Totally
I think many of us identify quite a bit with Peter, not because he was the most colorful of the twelve disciples of Jesus, but because he was so prone to say the wrong thing at the wrong time so much of the time. Also, he honestly thought he was the most devoted of the Twelve and was shocked that Jesus would say to him “Before the rooster crows you will disown me three times!” (John 13:38) Jesus said this to him immediately after Peter said “I will lay down my life for you” (v. 37).
That should teach us all a lesson. When we are feeling close to God and in a bit of a pious mood, perhaps we should be guarded in boasting how much we love Him. He knows us backward and forward, and I would hate to think what He might say to me were to speak confidently to Him of my ardent loyalty.
As the Lord had prophesied, within hours Peter denied knowing Jesus to a Galilean servant girl. When the rooster crowed, Peter remembered the word of Jesus, and “he went outside and wept bitterly” (Matt. 26:75).
It is a good that our failings do not take God by surprise. He not only understands us through and through, but He also knows the end from the beginning. Jesus even said to “Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift you as wheat. But I have prayed for you Simon, that your faith will not fail.
